Advancing Learning Day: Opening the Doors to Change – Macmillan Education

Change can be tremendously impactful and rewarding, and we all have the power to enact it. Taking that first step, however, can sometimes be daunting or overwhelming. Therefore, to open Season 5 of the Advancing Learning Academic Programme, we will take inspiration from Zarina Subhan, Harry Waters and Matthew Hayes by getting their advice and thoughts on how to inspire positive local and global change from within the wonderful world of the ELT classroom.

Event Schedule

Session 1 (20 mins)

Roundtable on Breaking Down Barriers to Change 

What is a ‘barrier’ in this context? What kind of ‘changes’ are we talking about here? Well, to kick things off, Zarina, Matthew and Harry will get us all on the same page by telling us some of their first-hand accounts of how they have overcome barriers to positive change during their respective careers in this roundtable discussion.

Session 2 (20 mins)

Finding Purpose with Global Citizenship by Matthew Hayes

In previous talks for Macmillan Education, Matthew has given practical tips on how to integrate global citizenship into the ELT classroom. In this talk he asks us all to engage with the why. Why should we integrate global citizenship into our classrooms, and how can global citizenship help each of us find our own purpose – as teachers, as students, as citizens of our shared world? 

Session 3 (20 mins)

Engage, Empower, Enact by Harry Waters

In this part of the session, we are going to look at how we can best inspire our students and colleagues into becoming Change Makers. We’ll see how we can guide them from Apathetic Andys into Caring Carolines with a few simple tweaks to help readjust mindsets.

Session 4 (20 mins)

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Practice by Zarina Subhan

As a language teacher, addressing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) might seem daunting at first. Therefore, Zarina will be sharing real-world case studies of English classes in Nepal, at various levels, to illustrate how it is possible to include DEI and language in reality.

Zarina Subhan has taught at all levels, in private and government institutions, worldwide as both teacher and teacher educator. She has worked in ELT for over 30 years in schools and universities, with policy makers, NGOs, local and state governments, community leaders, and in a variety of professional development contexts. Therefore, her interests now range from CPD, neurology of learning, CLIL/EMI, to inclusive and sustainable education.

Matthew Hayes, BA (Oxon), MA (SOAS), is a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Education in London. His current research concerns Global Citizenship Education in English language textbooks and he has previously written on Robert Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Matthew is also Managing Director of Technology from SAGE, an edtech division of the SAGE Publishing Group.

Harry Waters has been involved in English teaching for over 14 years. His passion for teaching and obsession with the planet led him to create Renewable English, an online English course, providing free classes and materials aimed at raising climate change awareness across the globe. Harry is also a passionate teacher trainer. He describes himself as an imperfect environmentalist with a love of flags and funky second-hand shirts.
